Charging Austin to Dallas, planned properly

195 miles of I-35 in August, in three different cars, with the stops, the costs and the thing nobody tells you about preconditioning.

Charging Austin to Dallas, planned properly

Austin to Dallas is 195 miles, mostly at 75 mph, often at 100 degrees. It is the trip our customers ask about most, so we did it three times in a week in three different cars and wrote down what happened.

The Aveon Lume S: no stop, if you start full

301 miles of EPA range, 25 kWh per 100 miles. At sustained 75 mph in heat, real consumption ran nearer 31 kWh per 100, which gives about 240 miles of usable range from a full charge. That covers 195 miles with a comfortable buffer and no stop.

The catch is that you have to actually start full, and most people charge to 80 percent daily to look after the pack. Charging to 100 percent the night before a trip is exactly what that setting is for.

The Kestra Ridge SE: one stop, fifteen minutes

289 miles on paper, but a taller vehicle pushing more air at 75 mph used about 36 kWh per 100. One stop at Waco brought it from 22 percent to 70 percent in fifteen minutes at a 190 kW post, which cost $12.40 at $0.44 per kWh.

Fifteen minutes is roughly the time it takes to use the restroom and buy a coffee, which is the honest comparison with a petrol stop rather than the theoretical one.

The Byrne Haul 150: two stops, and worth planning

45 kWh per 100 miles combined, closer to 55 at highway speed with a headwind. Two stops, one at Temple and one at Hillsboro, twenty minutes each. Electric trucks are genuinely less convenient on long highway runs and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Around town, where they mostly live, the maths is completely different.

Precondition the battery, always

This is the tip that makes the biggest difference and the one most people miss. If you navigate to a DC charger using the car's own navigation, it warms or cools the pack on approach so it can take full power the moment you plug in. Arrive without preconditioning on a hot day and the car will throttle to protect the pack, and a fifteen minute stop becomes thirty.

It costs a little energy on the way there and saves far more time than it costs. Set the destination in the car, not on your phone.

What the trip costs

Charging at home before you leave is the cheap part: a full Lume S pack at $0.1175 per kWh is about $8.70 for 300 miles. The DC stops on the way back are the expensive part at three to four times that rate. A round trip to Dallas with one stop each way lands at roughly $34 in a sedan against about $58 of petrol in an equivalent car. The saving is real but it is the daily home charging, not the road trips, where electric cars actually win.

Every figure in this article is a sample for demonstration. Payments, residuals, fees, incentives and charging rates depend on the vehicle, the lessor, your credit tier and the programmes in effect on the day. Offers are samples, subject to credit approval.
