Two valuations, one payoff, no games

What your current car is actually worth

Most people have no idea whether there is equity sitting in their existing lease or loan. Often there is. We pull the payoff from the lender, value the car two ways and show you both numbers.

Thank you. This is a demo form, so nothing was submitted. On the live site you would get a wholesale figure, a private party figure and, if there is finance on the car, the ten day payoff from your lender, usually within one business day.

What happens to your number

How a trade in valuation is put together

Two valuations and one payoff figure. The gap between wholesale and private party is real money, and you should be the one deciding who gets it.

    Tell us what you have

Year, make, model, trim, mileage and whether there is finance or a lease on it. Two photographs of the car and one of the odometer are enough to start.

  • 02

    We pull the payoff

If there is a loan or a lease, we get the ten day payoff figure from the lender directly rather than relying on what you were told last year.

  • 03

    Two valuations, not one

A wholesale auction figure and a private party estimate. You see both, because the gap between them is the money you would earn by selling it yourself.

  • 04

    Equity or shortfall, in writing

Value minus payoff. Positive equity becomes a capitalised cost reduction on the new lease. Negative equity can be rolled, but we will show you what that costs in the payment first.

Four outcomes, all of them normal

What equity and shortfall look like in practice

Sample trade in outcomes
SituationDetailResultWhat happens to it
Positive equity on a leaseThree year old sedan, payoff $27,400, private party value $28,900.$1,500 equityApplied as a cap cost reduction, which takes about $44 a month off a 36 month lease.
Positive equity on a loanFour year old SUV, loan balance $14,100, wholesale $16,800.$2,700 equitySame treatment. On a loan the equity is usually larger because the payoff falls faster than the value.
Roughly levelFive year old hatchback, no finance, private party value $9,200.$9,200 creditStraightforward: the whole value becomes your cap reduction, or we can write you a cheque instead.
Negative equityTwo year old truck, loan balance $41,600, wholesale $36,900.$4,700 shortfallIt can be rolled into the new lease, which adds around $140 a month. We will show that figure before anything is signed, and often suggest waiting.

Scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Sample scenarios for demonstration. Rolling negative equity into a new lease increases the capitalised cost, which increases both the depreciation and the rent charge components of the payment. We will always show you that number before anything is signed, and we will sometimes suggest waiting six months instead.

The part nobody tells you

There is often equity in a lease

A lease payoff is the remaining depreciation plus the residual plus unearned rent charge. If the market has been kinder to your car than the bank's three year forecast was, the difference belongs to whoever exercises the purchase option. That is you.

Nobody sends a letter about it. We have had customers finish a term $1,500 to $3,000 in the money and have no idea until we called. It is why the month 30 call exists.

Payoffs, equity androlling over

If a question you have is not here, call and ask for a lease advisor. Nobody will read you a script.

Ask the lessor for a payoff quote, then compare it with a private party valuation for your mileage and condition. If the value is higher, that difference is yours if you buy the car and sell it, or it can be used as a trade in credit on your next lease. We check this for every customer at month 30 and call if there is anything in it.

There are four routes and they are not equally priced. A pull ahead in the last six months can waive up to three payments. A lease transfer after month seven costs $595 and passes the car to a new driver. An early buyout makes sense when the car is worth more than the payoff, which happens more often than people expect. Straight early termination, where you owe the payoff minus wholesale value, is the expensive last resort.

The first check is a soft pull, which does not affect your score and tells us your tier and the money factor you qualify for. A hard pull only happens when you choose to proceed on a specific car, and you will be told before it happens.

Median decision time is eleven minutes during business hours. Applications submitted overnight are usually answered before 10 am. If something needs a manual look, Amira reviews it personally rather than sending a template decline.
