Reading the residual: why EV percentages sit lower

The single number that decides your payment is set by a bank you will never speak to. Here is what moves it, and what it means when it moves.

Reading the residual: why EV percentages sit lower

A lease is a bet on what a car will be worth at the end of it. The residual is the bank writing that bet down as a percentage of MSRP, and it decides more of your payment than any discount you negotiate.

High residual means the car is expected to hold value, so you are only paying for a small slice of it. Low residual means the opposite. This is why a heavily discounted car with a weak residual can lease worse than a full price car with a strong one.

Why electric residuals run lower

Residual setters are pricing three uncertainties that combustion cars do not carry. The first is technology risk: a three year old pack charges slower than whatever is on sale in 2029, and charge speed has become a headline spec. The second is incentive contamination: heavy new car incentives pull used values down, and nobody knows what the incentive landscape looks like in three years. The third is battery health perception, which is mostly unfounded but shows up in auction prices anyway.

The result is that a mainstream electric sedan might residualise at 58 percent over 36 months where an equivalent petrol car sits at 62. Four points on a $41,000 car is $1,640, or about $46 a month. That is the cost of the uncertainty, and you are the one paying it.

What moves the number on your specific deal

  • Term. Longer is always lower. A 39 month term gives up about a point and a half against 36; 48 months gives up seven.
  • Mileage band. 7,500 miles a year adds about a point and a half, 15,000 takes off three and a half.
  • Body style. SUVs hold value better than estates and sedans in Texas, which is a local fact, not a universal one.
  • Trim. Performance trims residualise lower than volume trims, because the used buyer pool for them is smaller.
  • Tyre and wheel size. Twenty inch wheels reduce range and increase running cost, and residual setters notice.

The one place a low residual helps you

At the end of the term, the residual is also your buyout price. If the bank guessed low and the car is worth more than the residual, that gap is equity and it belongs to whoever exercises the option, which is you.

We have seen customers finish a lease $1,500 to $3,000 in the money because the residual was set conservatively in a year when used prices held up. Nobody sends you a letter about it. That is why we check every customer's payoff against market at month 30 and call if there is anything there.

How to use this when you shop

Ask for three numbers on any lease quote: the selling price, the residual percentage, and the money factor. With those you can rebuild the payment yourself in about thirty seconds, and any quote you cannot rebuild is hiding something. Our calculator does the arithmetic if you would rather not.

Every figure in this article is a sample for demonstration. Payments, residuals, fees, incentives and charging rates depend on the vehicle, the lessor, your credit tier and the programmes in effect on the day. Offers are samples, subject to credit approval.
