Charging at home versus charging in public

The gap is about four to one. On a 12,000 mile year that difference is larger than most people's entire capitalised cost reduction, so it is worth getting right before the car arrives.

What a mile actually costs

Energy prices are quoted per kilowatt hour, which tells you nothing until you know how much your car uses. Pick a car and this converts every rate into cents per mile and into an annual figure at your mileage.

Consumption
25 kWh / 100 mi
Battery
74 kWh
EPA range
301 miles
Full charge at home
$8.70

Real world consumption runs 15 to 25 percent above the EPA figure at sustained highway speed in Texas heat. Around town it is usually better than the sticker.

Sample rates for demonstration. The Austin Energy EV plan overnight rate, standard residential rate and public network pricing all change; check current tariffs before relying on these figures. Consumption is the EPA combined rating. Charging losses of around 8 to 12 percent between the wall and the battery are not included.

Three install outcomes, quoted before you sign

Rosa surveys your panel, the run length and where the car parks. You get one of three numbers and it does not move afterwards. On a 36 month lease or longer the standard install is included.

Included

Level 2, standard install

$0included on a 36 month lease or longer

  • 11.5 kW, 48 A hardwired unit
  • Up to 40 ft of conduit from the panel
  • City of Austin permit and inspection included
  • Wi-Fi scheduling so it charges off peak automatically

Extended run install

$390typical, for detached garages

  • 40 to 120 ft of conduit, trenching quoted separately
  • Outdoor rated enclosure and disconnect
  • Permit and inspection included
  • Cable management hook fitted

Service panel upgrade

$1,450typical, quoted after a site survey

  • 100 A to 200 A service upgrade
  • Common in homes built before 1985
  • Utility coordination handled by us
  • Load calculation supplied to Austin Energy
No off street parking?

We size the lease differently rather than pretending it will work. A smaller battery on a lower mileage band, charged at public Level 2 where you park during the day, is a better answer than a 100 kWh car and a DC fast charging habit at four times the price. We do this regularly in 78704 and 78702.

What eats range in Texas

Range, and the four things that take it away

Heat, speed, load and altitude change all cost energy. None of them are surprises if somebody tells you the numbers before delivery rather than after.

4 factors, scroll sideways
  • Heat

    10 to 15%

Mostly air conditioning rather than the pack itself. A car with a heat pump loses noticeably less. Precondition while the car is still plugged in and you pay for it from the wall rather than from the battery.

  • Speed

    About 20%

80 mph on I-35 uses roughly 20 percent more than the EPA combined figure. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed, so this is the single biggest lever you control.

  • Towing and load

    30 to 45%

A small trailer costs about a third. Five thousand pounds behind a Haul 150 costs closer to 45 percent. Plan the charge stops before you book the beach house, not on the way.

  • Roof load

    4 to 8%

Bare crossbars cost around 4 percent. A loaded roof box is closer to 8. Take the bars off when you are not using them; it is the cheapest range upgrade there is.

When public charging makes sense

DC fast charging is a tool, not a habit

At roughly 3.7 times the home rate, using public DC fast charging as your daily method costs more than the fuel it replaced. As an occasional road trip tool it is excellent, and the twenty minute stop on the Dallas run is genuinely comparable to a petrol stop once you account for the restroom and the coffee.

  • Precondition the pack by navigating to the charger in the car, not on your phone
  • Charge from 10 to 80 percent, not to 100; the last 20 percent takes as long as the first 60
  • Two shorter stops usually beat one long one, because charge rate tapers
  • Your first year includes a $240 public charging credit for exactly this

Charging questions

Charging andrange

If a question you have is not here, call and ask for a lease advisor. Nobody will read you a script.

The unit and a standard install are included on a 36 month lease or longer. Standard means up to 40 feet of conduit from your panel to the wall, plus the City of Austin permit and inspection. If your home needs a service upgrade from 100 to 200 amps, that is quoted separately and typically runs $1,450. We survey before you sign, so you know which one you are in.

On the Austin Energy EV plan overnight at $0.1175 per kWh, a car using 25 kWh per 100 miles costs about 2.9 cents a mile. The same car on public DC fast charging at $0.44 per kWh costs about 11 cents a mile. Charging at home is roughly a quarter of the price, which is the single biggest running cost decision you will make.

Expect 10 to 15 percent in genuine heat, mostly to air conditioning rather than to the battery. Winter is a smaller effect here than it is up north, and cars with a heat pump lose noticeably less. Sustained highway speed costs more than temperature does: 80 mph on I-35 will use around 20 percent more than the EPA combined figure.

Yes, but the lease should be built differently. We would size you to a smaller battery and a lower mileage band, and plan around public Level 2 where you park during the day rather than DC fast charging, which is three to four times the price. We do this regularly for customers in 78704 and 78702.
